Bonfield Professor of Biomedical Materials. School of Engineering and Materials Science, Queen Mary University of London, Mile End Road, London E1 4NS
My research is developing materials to replace or to augment bone and the mechanical properties of bone. One of the materials I have worked on is HAPEX™, which has been used in over 1 million middle ear implants since in the 1990s. I have developed other composite biomaterials both degradable and non-degradable. The other area I have concentrated on is the mechanical properties of pathological bone
I was one of the first academic on the Biomaterials degrees in Queen Mary University of London in the 1980s and in 2010 started the University of Glasgow Biomedical Engineering, the first such undergraduate degrees in Scotland.
I was elected Fellow in Biomaterials Science and Engineering (FBSE) in 2004 and Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering in 2006, Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 2015. I was a member of the Executive Committee of the European Society for Biomaterials 2001-2009 and Secretary 2005-5009. I was awarded an OBE in the New Year’s Honour List 2016 and a PhD(Hon Caus) by Lund University in 2017 for my on bone and bone replacement materials. I was one the the three hosts of the World Biomaterials Congress 2020.
